"The Chatfield Family of Derby, Conn." by Donald Lines Jacobus.

The descent of the American Chatfields from the armigerous family of Chatfield of South Mundham in Pagham, co. Sussex, England, has been set for th in the REGISTER, vol. 70, pages 55-65, 125-136. Three sons of Henry Chatfield of Pagham emigrated to New England in 1639, and settled in Guilford, Conn. Of these, Francis 1 died without issue, Thomas 1 removed to Easthampton, Long Island, and left issue, and George 1 died at Killingworth, Conn., leaving two sons, John 2 and George 2. Of the two last named, George 2 remained at Killingworth, leaving descendants there, while John 2 settled in Derby, Conn. It is the purpose of the present article to set forth the descendants of John 2 Chatfield for four generations . Some account of this family has appeared in Orcutt's "History of Derby, Conn.," Springfield, Mass., 1880, page 709, in "Seymore Past and Present," by Messrs. Campbell, Sharpe, and Bassett, Seymour, Conn., 1902, page 418, and in "The Chatfield Family" by william C. Sharpe, Seymour, Conn., 1896. The material in these accounts was drawn chiefly from vital records and private family sources, and probate and other records were obviously not consulted in their preparation; the present article aims to supply omissions and correct errors in the previous accounts, and will omit lines that have been adequately set forth in them.
