INDEX

Notes

!NOTE: Rev. Timothy Brooks came to West Jersey with the Bowen's from Swansea, MA. He is descended from Henry Brooks, one of the earliest settlers of Woburn, MA. He pastored the company of Baptists who worshipped in the log chapel in Bowentown, NJ. In 1710, he separated from that group and became the pastor of the Cohansey Baptist Church. Two of his daughters, however, continued their affiliation with the Seventh Day Baptists who continued to worship in the Bowentown chapel.

!SOURCE: COLONIAL CLERGY OF THE MIDDLE COLONIES, compiled by Frederick Lewis Weis, Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., Baltimore, MD, 1978, p. 21. "TIMOTHY BROOKS, b. Woburn, Mass., 16 Oct. 1662, son of Henry and Susannah Brooks; came from Swansea, Mass., to Cohansey, N.J., ca. 1687, where he was living 10 Mar. 1711/2; sett. Cohansey (Salem) N.J., 1710-1716 (and perhaps 1687-1716); also Cohansey, N. J., 2nd Bapt. Chh., 1700-1710; Bapt.; d. Cohansey, N.J., 1716, a. 54." This conflicts with other sources which have another Timothy Brooks between Henry and Rev. Timothy.
